Superintendent's Message

Dr. McLaughlin, Superintendent of Schools
The new calendar year of 2016 offered a special gift to the North Plainfield school community.  Google Apps for Education (GAFE) became a reality for our district on January 5th.  GAFE is a core suite of communication and collaboration applications that allows students to work from any device on documents and projects.  GAFE provides our students and staff with important new ways to enhance communication.  Chief among these tools is the provision of a Google email address to all students in 5th through 12th grade.  Google calendar is another important communication tool that will serve to synchronize due dates for assignments and dates designated for classroom assessment.  Students will have access to their own Google Drive which has unlimited storage so that assignments and projects may be saved by students and accessed from any device with internet availability.  The array of features includes Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms which replicate commonly used software such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint.  GAFE allows all of its applications to be shared among users, if so designated, a feature that truly promotes collaboration among students and allows feedback to students by teachers directly into the document.  A most exciting feature is Google Classroom, which provides the potential for a paperless classroom.

It is expected that the various features of GAFE will be utilized in different ways and to different degrees by teachers according to the needs of their classes and each unique curriculum.  This platform has proven, however, to open technology to the use of students in previously unmatched ways.  Current estimates cite 50 million users of GAFE worldwide, pointing to the usefulness educators have found in this powerful online tool.  A secondary benefit to adopting GAFE is its connection to Chromebooks which operate from a Google platform.  Chromebooks offer a durable and cost effective alternative to other devices such as laptops and tablets.  As a result, the district will be able to purchase significantly more Chromebook devices without increasing the budget for technology with a bottom line of putting more technology in the hands of our students.

During the Fall of 2015 letters were issued to all district parents detailing the aspects of GAFE and requesting a one time permission for their children to use this tool.  Unless revoked by a parent, this permission will last for the duration of a student’s time in the North Plainfield Schools.  We thank parents who have returned permission and ask any parent who may not have yet done so, to sign and return this form to school as quickly as possible.  If you need an additional form please request one from your school office or visit to download a form from our website.
