The NPHS Marching Band performed admirably both on and off the field at the All States Band Competition in Allentown, Pennsylvania on November 8, 2009. Although they did not place in the standings, they received a score of 85, the highest score all season. The color guard's precision garnered a 4th place out of 13 schools in their division. A graduate of NPHS, Nick Sawyer (2004), now a Rutgers medical student, was at the competition and sent Dorian Parreott, band director, the following remarks: "Thanks so much for a great performance this afternoon. It was a wonderful show..." As a former member of the NPHS Band, Mr. Sawyer offered the following advice to the band members: "The skills you have learned in the marching ensembles can take you farther than you imagined, and if you bring that energy to your other passions, you will succeed. You should all be proud of what you have done this season! And I look forward to seeing everyone for Thanksgiving." The Music Parents provided our students with a hot buffet after the performance.

East End School
East End second graders sent cheer and goodies to our troops. Second grade teacher Angela Phillips worked with her students as they created Halloween cards for the soldiers. Ms. Phillips sent the cards and goodie bags to her nephew in Afghanistan, who shared them with his fellow soldiers. Lieutenant Morrison is in the 4th Infantry Division from Fort Carson, Colorado. According to Kathy Herrmann, principal, “The cards were beautifully decorated and hopefully the written messages put a smile on the soldiers’ faces.” A picture of the completed cards can be found on East End School’s website.
East End Math Fair a Grand Success! On October 20, East End School held a Math Fair. Sponsored by the East End PTA, members of the East End staff and parents collaborated with Patricia Marseglia, supervisor of math and science, to create various problem-solving stations. Based on the work of Cathy Kobylarz, Stony Brook principal; and Mary Thomsen, district LDTC, the fair had a “Wizard of Oz” theme. Children walked on the Yellow Brick Road with parents and teachers dressed as Dorothy, the Tin Man, Glinda and other characters performing explorations of data analysis, estimation, computation, place value, measurement and problem solving. East End students attended during the day and many returned in the evening with their parents. The East End teachers involved included Sharon Egan, Jill Fogarty, Lisa Gabriel, Karen Lewis, Mollie Mallett, Nicole Rossi and Barbara Sobel. Many thanks to them and to the PTA members for their participation in this event!
On October 23, East End School held its monthly Citizen of the Month Assembly which is based on the six pillars of character education. Students were recognized by teachers and awarded certificates for their efforts. Each child’s picture was taken and placed on the Citizen of the Month bulletin board in the front entrance of the school. Families of the students being honored attended the assembly and were filled with pride as their child received the award.
Also on October 23, East End School held its annual Sweatshirt Day. Staff and students wore their favorite sweatshirts to school. The majority of the sweatshirts worn were East End School sweatshirts which demonstrated school pride. The East End PTA worked diligently to ensure that the sweatshirt sale was in time for Sweatshirt Day. Go Mustangs!
October 27 was Picture Day at East End School. Individual and class pictures were taken. Members of the PTA volunteered throughout the day to assist the students and staff. ID cards will be distributed along with the pictures in a few short weeks. The staff also assembled for a group picture that morning.
October was Fire Prevention Month and on October 29, members of the North Plainfield Fire Department held an assembly to educate and raise awareness about fire prevention. Students viewed a video and learned various strategies to prevent fire and ways to survive in case of a fire. The firefighters answered questions and assigned a homework assignment which was to go home and remind their families to check the batteries in the smoke detectors. “A great deal of information was shared with the students and the firefighters are to be commended on their presentation,” commented Principal Herrmann.
East End School held its Halloween Parade on October 30. Students and staff were dressed in their costumes as they marched outside on the school grounds to the beautiful music provided by members of North Plainfield High School’s Marching Band. Tom Mazur, supervisor of fine, practical, and performing arts, facilitated the event and the high school band director, Dorian Parreott ,directed the members of the band as they played and entertained the crowd.
Stony Brook School
Stony Brook's Annual Harvest Fest: Stony Brook School once again celebrated the fall season with the annual Harvest Fest held on October 30, 2009. Organized by Patricia Klatt, academic support teacher; Stony Brook's PTA parents and with the help of members of the Canuck football team, the students and teachers were treated to a festive fall celebration. As they arrived to school, the front lawn had been filled with pumpkins, bales of hay and ingredients for making scarecrows. Each of the classes was invited to the "pumpkin patch" to select and decorate their pumpkins to take home. Classes then worked collaboratively to create their own scarecrows which now sit proudly on the front lawn of Stony Brook School as part of a Harvest display. Former Stony Brook staff members were on board for the celebration, and special thanks go to Gail Murray, Josephine Hazzard, Linda Helmstetter, and Andy Stout for all of the help.
Hispanic Heritage Celebration: On the evening of October 15, 2009, Stony Brook School hosted its annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration, complete with song, traditional dance and advice for parents on educating their children. Organized by Maria Farraye-Biggs, DPS social worker; Leslie Castillo, Stony Brook's School counselor; Leah Glicksman, bilingual teacher; Monica Villafuerte, world language teacher and Nancy Lasluisa, paraprofessional, the event was attended by over 130 parents and children from Stony Brook School. Leah Glicksman's bilingual students were dressed in the traditional clothing from each of the countries they studied and performed a litany of traditional songs and dances. Ms. Villafuerte's Spanish Club proudly sang the Spanish version of the alphabet, shapes and the continents. Somerset School's dance troupe, Heidi, performed traditional dances as well. Counselors Maria Biggs and Leslie Castillo gave an informal discussion for parents about the public school district of North Plainfield and the importance of parental involvement. Following the show, guests were invited to join in a light dinner and cake for dessert. The honored guest for the evening was Tom Mazur, supervisor of fine, practical, and performing arts.
Star Lab: Star light, star bright, first stars I see tonight are in the Star Lab! Thanks to the efforts of Michele Motichka and her team of starry-eyed teachers, the students and families of Stony Brook School were treated to an evening under the stars in the Star Lab on October 27, 2009. The Stony Brook gym was magically transformed into a virtual star center, with the Star Lab at the center of activity. Families visited the lab and while waiting were invited to the Stony Brook theatre which featured video streaming clips of the constellations, books on stars and constellations to be decorated. Star Lab is a portable planetarium when inflated by a medium sized fan, holds up to thirty visitors. Images of constellations and the evening skies were projected on the inside walls of this dome structure by a small projection canister. Ms. Motichka led guided tours of the night sky for all to study.
West End School
School Violence Awareness and Character Counts Week: The week of October 19 - 23 was a busy one at West End School! West End celebrated School Violence Awareness Week, with the theme of No Name-Calling, as well as Character Counts Week. Karen Buffolino, counselor, visited all classrooms in the two weeks prior to SVA Week to prepare the students with relevant, grade-level appropriate lessons on topics such as friendship, bullying and verbal bullying. During SVA Week, quotes related to peace and tolerance were read during morning announcements. Students were asked to consider and sign a No-Name Calling pledge, which is now hanging by the entrance on Harrington Avenue. Students also made "bricks" for the school’s Wall of Kindness, on which they wrote one thing that they do to make West End a kinder, more peaceful place.
During the week the third and fourth graders participated in a Mix-it-up-at-Lunch Day. Students were assigned to sit at different tables to get to know students with whom they are not necessarily already friends. Students learned about the themes of peace and violence awareness during their special classes as well.
Finally, students were asked to participate in a writing contest on the topic of verbal bullying. At the WE Celebrate Assembly on October 30, staff highlighted the Wall of Kindness and read the works of three fourth graders whose essays/ poems really spoke to the theme of verbal bullying. Student Council members designed posters for both School Violence Awareness Week and Character Counts Week. In addition, students were asked to wear a different color for each Character Counts pillar each day of the week! Counselor Buffolino, who is also the school’s Character Education facilitator stated, “It is our hope that by infusing these important themes throughout the curriculum over the span of not just a week, but the whole month of October, the students were able to really take in these important concepts in a fun, meaningful way.”
October WE Assembly: At the October WE Celebrate assembly Marilyn Pinto, student liaison coordinator, recognized the children in grades K-2 for demonstrating excellent audience behavior. Taryn Buffolino, school counselor, then thanked the school for contributing to the Wall of Kindness and three fourth graders -- Jordan Grundy, Peixe Williams and Brian Orozco Rojas-- were recognized for their essays and poems about using nice words and not bullying. Theresa Knauer, first grade teacher, recognized four classes with the most box tops collected in the month. In October, West End earned $224 dollars by bringing in 2,240 boxtops!! So far this year, West End has earned $461.50 by bringing in the boxtops. That is HALF of what was earned the entire year last year. Kourtney Karl’s first grade class won first place with 240 boxtops. Second place was a 3-WAY tie, each with 200 boxtops – Nicole Iannucci’s kindergarten, Veronica Quick’s second grade class, and Michelle Tafuri's fourth grade class. The school was then treated to a spooky but fun Halloween story read by kindergarten teacher Buzzy Durkin. Jonathan Scott, general music teacher, accompanied her on the piano to add to the spooky atmosphere. The assembly ended with the naming of the monthly Westie Winners!
Parent Engagement Committee – Third Annual Spaghetti Dinner: The Parent Engagement Committee started the year strong. West End’s Third Annual Spaghetti Dinner was held on October 22, 2009 and was a wonderful success. Parents and students sat down together with West End staff members to enjoy dinner and each other's company. A warm and inviting atmosphere was created as teachers and parents discussed possible future events they would like to experience at West End School. While staff heated up the spaghetti, parents filled out index cards indicating suggestions, interests and concerns. Comments submitted in both English and Spanish showed a tremendous appreciation for this event, as well as our West End School. Committee member Marilyn Pinto reported, “Statements such as ‘We love the dedicated teachers at West End’ and ‘My children love being here at West End’ were some of the many wonderful comments written.” The committee plans on reviewing suggestions made and discussing possible solutions that will address some of the concerns mentioned. The goal is to create a partnership between teachers and parents that will enhance the educational process.
Somerset School
Somerset School 6th grade Family Math Night: On October 29, Somerset School held its annual Family Math Night for its sixth grade students and parents. Family Math Night is a way for parents and children to talk and work together while learning. It also provides a time and place where communication can take place between the classroom teacher and the family. Mathematical games and activities were put into place to encourage communication and learning as students and parents worked together at math stations sharing, clarifying, and defending their understanding of mathematics. Parents realized from the Family Math Nights that math is more than memorizing rules. Parents had the opportunity to communicate with teachers about how math is being taught. They also had the opportunity to work on math activities with their children in a non-threatening environment. Parents went home with activities to encourage and further math at home.
Celebrate America Day, Grade 5 Assembly, November11, 2009: Somerset School organized a special Veterans Day program to honor those who served. A yearly event, veterans from the Marines, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard were honored with songs, speeches, and several numbers from Somerset School choir. Jerard Stephenson, NPHS principal, presented a slideshow, using music that spanned from WWII through the first Iraq War in 1992. “It was an emotional time of reflection," said Mr. Stephenson, a veteran. "I enjoyed the program. I thought it was real nice. It's good to honor the people that served,” he continued.
“It's just nice to see all of our students get together so they appreciate the sacrifices other people have made for our freedom. I think it's a good lesson for our students” said Principal Reginald Sainte-Rose. “We believe that this is the best lesson the students could be taught about their veterans.”
NPHS/Somerset School
Through Reginald Sainte-Rose, principal of Somerset School, and the M.A.L.E.S Mentor program connection, AT&T will host about 30 North Plainfield High School AP and honors students on December 4 to tour the prestigious Global Network Operations Center (GNOC) facilities in Bedminster, NJ. For more than 100 years, AT&T has set the industry standard for network reliability and network security. The GNOC in New Jersey plays a vital role in ensuring that those standards of excellence are maintained across all segments of our global network. AT&T is the largest and most sophisticated command-and-control center of its kind in the world. The GNOC staff monitors and proactively manages the data and voice traffic flowing across AT&T's domestic and global networks twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. From their workstations on the GNOC floor, they can quickly survey a sweeping wall of 141 giant screens showing different aspects of network activity, network topography and news events. As part of the typical GNOC tour, students will experience the newly renovated GNOC Gallery. This entrance hall sets the stage for the management discussion in the GNOC Theater. The vice president will also address students and answer any questions that they might have about careers in science, technology and math. Lunch will also be provided to our students. Ramon Rasaq, AP Calculus teacher; Ron Fisher, director of technology; and Mr. Sainte-Rose will accompany the students on this trip.
NPHS
The NPHS Middle States planning team met on November 10, 2009 at 7a.m. in the library. Members of the planning team represent the stakeholders of NPHS (students, parents, teacher, administrators, Board members, Borough Council members, and residents). The planning team looked at revising the mission statement of the school. The next meeting will take place on December 8, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. The focus of the next meeting is on finalizing the mission statement and developing a statement of beliefs.
NPMS
Junior National Honor Society (JNHS) Project: As part of a community service project, NPMS will partner with a middle school in Soweto, South Africa. The honor society is comprised of approximately 30 seventh and eighth grade high achieving students. The NPMS JNHS will provide peer tutoring and academic support in the area of mathematics to South African students. This opportunity was made possible through the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education (GSE) South Africa Initiative (SAI), an interdisciplinary program that facilitates international contacts among United States and South African educators. This community service project will begin in January 2010.
Grade Eight Civics Students Published!: In an effort to research activities for her eighth grade civics class, Theresa Zimmerman, social studies teacher, found a website for the Association for Children of New Jersey. As a research and advocacy organization for children, they were organizing a letter writing campaign to the three main New Jersey gubernatorial candidates regarding the concerns of kids in New Jersey (Make Kids Count). “Since one of the topics we cover as part of the 8th grade curriculum is state and local government, I figured that this letter writing campaign was a great opportunity. All of my students wrote rough drafts, which were edited by me. They created final copies and printed out their copies for me to send in to the ACNJ, which delivered the letters to the candidates,” commented Ms. Zimmerman. North Plainfield Middle School was one of three schools in the area selected for publication in the Star Ledger (Dr. E. Alma Flagg Elementary School in Newark and the Secaucus Middle School were the other two.) Congratulations to the following journalists from NPMS: Christian Obando, Jazmin English, Michael Guallpa and Tayler Zoda.

Gifted and Talented
Third Grade Gifted and Talented Students Visit Princeton: “Buildings tell a story,” Dr. Jang explained to the third grade Gifted & Talented students from North Plainfield, as they accompanied their teacher, Janet Darvin, on an archeological tour of Princeton. Students learned this truth the morning of October 29 when they visited the Historical Society of Princeton (HSP) for “Princeton Inside and Out.” The program began with an inside tour of Bainbridge House, (named for the most famous inhabitant of the present day HSP). Built in 1776, Bainbridge House is a remarkably preserved example of Georgian architecture and students had a wonderful time discovering the features unique to this style. Third graders toured the museum and viewed artifacts uncovered in the vicinity. Next they embarked on a walking tour of Princeton and the university. The walking tour began with an outside observation of Bainbridge House. Third graders listened and sketched the Georgian architectural features including the symmetrical façade, keystone lintels, cornice atop the house, and the door pediment. They learned that many of these features are decorative - as opposed to the functional outward-jutting of brick near the bottom of the house on all sides which prevents water from seeping into the basement (critically important to colonial homeowners who stored food there).
Once the sketches were complete, Dr. Jang escorted students onto the Princeton University campus. As they walked, they learned the origin of the town’s name as Prince’s Town as well as neighboring towns that were named for royalty, King’s Town (now Kingston) and Queen’s town (now Queen’s Court). The beauty of Princeton University was captivating to students and they immediately recognized the vast difference in architectural style from Bainbridge House. Gothic architecture is ornately depicted on nearly all the buildings and students listened intently as Dr. Jang discussed the qualities and invited students to share their personal observations of the style. The tour concluded with a visit to the oldest building, Nassau Hall, once the only structure within the university which acted as classroom, dormitory, cafeteria, laundry, library, and study hall. Draped in ivy, students learned that this lovely evergreen plant visibly clinging to every building, is the symbol of learning (dating from ancient Greece) and often given by a graduating class as a gift to the university to demonstrate gratitude.
G&T/ KINDLE Grants: The North Plainfield Gifted and Talented / KINDLE teachers were the proud recipients of two grants. Cynthia Crawford, Janet Darvin, and Kathy Porter received grant money from the North Plainfield Education Foundation and the North Plainfield Pride in Education Program. The grant money will be used to enhance G&T/KINDLE programs in the North Plainfield Elementary Schools and at Somerset School.
The North Plainfield Education Foundation Mini Grant of $250 was awarded for an ongoing KINDLE Project entitled “Thinking Outside the Box.” Designed to promote higher level skills including critical, creative, and flexible thinking, students will be encouraged to “think outside the box” as they generate novel ideas, imagine alternative viewpoints, make connections between things not often seen, and develop persistence while solving problems. Various puzzles, which challenge conventional thinking, will be implemented during KINDLE classes. Students will be challenged to break barriers which limit the scope of their imagination and intelligence and will develop traits such as perseverance, confidence, and collaboration. Creating a box and enhancing it to their liking will serve as a visual reminder of the box we all strive to think outside of. Brainstorming tools and traits which characterize “out of the box thinking,” and storing them within the box to be retrieved when faced with future problem solving challenges, will enable students to put their hands on tangible solutions and help ensure their success.
The North Plainfield Pride in Public Education Grant of $250 was awarded for the Parent Involvement component of the G&T/ KINDLE program. The 4th annual G&T/KINDLE Family Night will be held at Somerset School in March of 2010. The purpose of the evening has been to keep parents informed of the district’s program and to share in the exhibits of student work. The evening gives the teachers the opportunity to show appreciation for parental support of this program. While the children participate in activities directed by the teachers, parents view a Power Point presentation on the three components of the program while having the opportunity to discuss topics and ask questions with supervisor, Cathy Kobylarz. Displays of student work decorate the school; refreshments are served while a slide show, highlighting G&T/KINDLE students serves as the finale of the evening. “The G&T/KINDLE teachers look forward to the activities and events they will be able to implement as a result of receiving the grant money. We are most appreciative of the support for the G&T/KINDLE Program being offered from these North Plainfield organizations,” stated Kathy Porter, East End School.
Mathematics
The Learnia pretest has been administered in grades 3-8 in both math and language arts. In addition, math tests for the first marking period have been assigned. Reports from these interim tests tell teachers whether students have, indeed, gained all they should have from math instruction. In-district professional development courses about the various reports in Learnia will be rescheduled shortly, as the originally scheduled dates came before the first marking period test.
NP Education Foundation Grants were awarded to Teresa Thompson, NPHS math teacher, and Dr. Sarah O’Donnell, NPHS science teacher. Ms. Thompson’s project involves the use of interactive notebooks in her geometry classes. These notebooks include teacher input, as most notebooks do, but also provide a place for students to process that input in any number of ways, including graphic organizers and drawings. Dr. O’Donnell will begin hydroponic gardening with botany classes with the support of the grant money. This is Dr. O’Donnell’s second grant win in a row!
Homework? In a review of the new mathematics homework guidelines, teachers are reporting mildly positive effects. Some have begun to see more student interest in gaining full credit for math homework; others see a slight increase in the rate of return of homework. Most math teachers believe that the single set of guidelines for math homework will have a greater impact on student achievement with time.
DISTRICT OPERATIONS & AUXILIARY SERVICES
SAFETY TRAINING
The safety topic for October was electrical safety. Related safety training was conducted with all staff members on October 22, 2009. The topic for November is Confined Space Awareness. Related safety training will be conducted with all staff members before month’s end.
HEALTH & SAFETY
H1-N1 (Pandemic Swine Flu) The C.D.C. (Center for Disease Control) and W.H.O. (World Health Organization) are preparing to implement a full scale vaccination program. Clinical trials of a vaccine were successful and should be available in the near future. The target population, aside from school age children, continues to change. The district is working closely with the Somerset County Health Department to set up vaccination sites when the vaccine is available. Additional updates will be issued whenever relevant information is released to the public.
In order to reduce our exposure to the H1-N1 Flu Virus, the district will continue to follow the directives listed below. 1. Routine cleaning that is normally completed using a multi-purpose cleaner will now be performed using an antibacterial disinfectant cleaner. 2. All staff members have been given a Swine Flu Fact Sheet that contains a number of safety precautions to prevent the spread of this virus. 3. We will continue to issue Safety Bulletins when procedural changes to our program are necessary.
Additional protocols have now been implemented as the threat of the virus continues to increase. The C.D.C. has now implemented a threat level monitoring system in anticipation of the impending epidemic. We are currently operating under Defcon 2. This level of threat is defined as “A direct threat to the community that warrants the implementation of temporary measures to reduce exposure.”
ACCIDENT PREVENTION
We are currently preparing to reactivate the Safety Committee. A draft committee program has been forwarded to central administration for review. Once reviewed, it will be forwarded to the Facilities and Finance Committee for final approval. A reorganization meeting will be scheduled shortly thereafter.
