Welcome to West End School – Home of the Wildcats!
For those of you who do not know me I am Mrs. Sobel, your child’s principal. I am very excited to be the principal of West End School and I look forward to having your child attend the same elementary school that I attended as a child.
Elementary school is a wonderful journey! There is so much to learn and experience. It is my pleasure to assist your child on this journey down the road of discovery.
As your child starts school, there are a few items that
I need to inform you about:
Our school day begins at 8:25 and ends at 2:35. Your child should arrive at school at 8:20 and picked up promptly at dismissal.
School lunch and school breakfast is available every day for those who wish to purchase it. Your child may purchase lunch daily or occasionally. A menu will be provided. If your child does not want the school lunch please have him/her bring a lunch from home.
Please have your child bring a snack everyday for snack time (Grades K-2). I encourage nutritious snacks. Crackers, vegetables, bottle of water or a piece of fruit work well. There is only time for a quick snack so please do not send multiple items. Your child’s teacher will inform you of their snack routine for their own classroom. It is wise to pack their snack in a different container than their lunch.
Please have your child bring a backpack to school everyday. The backpack needs to be large enough to hold a lunchbox, folder, papers, and assorted other items during the school year. Backpacks on wheels are not allowed since they do not fit in our lockers and are a hazard out in the classroom and on the stairs.
Children should wear appropriate shoes to school. Closed toe shoes with rubber soles or sneakers are best. They provide protection and sure footing for climbing and playground activities. Sandals, dress shoes, clogs and flip-flop shoes are discouraged. Only appropriate sneakers are allowed for physical education class. Sneakers with wheels are not allowed.
Below is a list of things we need your help with in order to help your child succeed:
REGULAR ATTENDANCE: Make sure your child is at school unless ill or a family emergency.
BE ON TIME: The bell rings at 8:25. Be sure your child knows to be in his/her class on time.
BREAKFAST: Make sure your child eats breakfast at home or plans to eat in the Breakfast Program at school.
CONTACT/INFORMATION CHANGES: We need a working phone number and current contact information at all times. If a phone number changes, we need to know immediately. For your child’s safety we need to be able to contact you. Please keep phone numbers, email address, and home addresses updated with the teacher AND the office.
TRANSPORTATION CHANGES: If someone is picking up your child, or if your child is going home a way other than what you have indicated on the general dismissal form, please let the teacher and the office know. They MUST have a note approved by the office before a change can be made or accepted.
SIGN OUT: Sign your child out through the office if you plan to pick them up early. Your child cannot be released to you in the building unless s/he has been signed out through the front office. You must present a form of picture identification in order to sign your child out early from school.
ATTEND CONFERENCES: Please attend all scheduled conferences and meetings.
HOMEWORK: In elementary school students go from learning to read to reading to learn. Please make sure your child reads nightly. Please make sure you read to your child nightly. Return homework promptly. Encourage your child and assist them with their homework, projects, etc.
ALLERGIES/MEDICINE/HEALTH ISSUES: Let us know if there are any food or drug allergies, health issues, or medical concerns or if your child is taking medication. The nurse needs to know this information. If there are any health problems or concerns that we need to make adjustments for at school, we will review that and make a plan. If your child needs medicine here at school, it needs to come with a doctor’s note and be kept in the nurse’s office. Please stay in touch with the school nurse and child’s teacher in regard to these and if there are any changes over the school year.
TALK TO YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER: Please email or call if you have any concerns or questions. The teacher needs to know if your child brings home any concerns or is unhappy at school. They don’t always tell the teacher when something is bothering them. Let the teacher know if you don’t understand a note or homework assignment.
Teachers have voicemail and email. You can find this contact information on their web page.
After speaking to the teacher, if you have continued concerns or questions, feel free to contact me.
It is always a good idea to be involved with your child’s school. Please consider joining our PTA.
Here is to a great year!!
Mrs. B. Sobel
