| ***************************************************************************** We are working on our module on Water and Aqueous Solutions, Chapter 15. Our test will be on Friday, May 17. ******************************************************************** Science Essay on Surfactants is due on June 7. Essays must be submitted through MyAccess. Please do not wait until the due date!. Late submissions will yield a lower grade, and excuses such as "I couldn;t log on" or "my printer didn't work last night"are getting real old. When the assignment is given you will pick one specific topic, research it thoroughly and write a 1,000 word report on it. Include references. A general survey will earn a grade of B, at best. Do not write a general survey! ******************************************************************** Answers to CW problems: ******************************************************************** Handouts : ************************************************************************ ************************************************************************ Chemistry is, according to most people, a difficult subject. Having taught Honors Chemistry before and now teaching it again, I assure you that these students make it look easy. Typical Honors students have a drive and ability that is well above average. In Honors Chemistry, we will explore the subject with greater depth than General Chemistry. The student is expected to work harder, faster and with greater attention to detail. In addition, there will be topics covered that will not be in General Chemistry. I always provide worksheets for my students to work on independently. There are problem sets on this website. Also, the book provides problems they can work on, independent of any formal assignment. Therefore, there is always homework on which they can work to improve their knowledge! Course Objectives: The purpose of taking science in high school is not just to learn a body of knowledge or prepare for further scientific study, but also to practice thinking scientifically, writing technically, and to become familiar with some of the technology used in mathematics and science. Outcomes expected: Problem Solving: - Students will be able to interpret chemistry problems associated with the topics covered in this course. - Students will be able to solve chemistry problems associated with the topics covered in this course. Laboratory Techniques: - Students will be able to conduct a chemistry experiment. - Students will be able to do all integrated process skills associated with an experiment. Writing: - Students will be able to write technically. - Students will be able to write a formal laboratory report. Technology: - Students will be able to use their calculator to aid in problem solving and data analysis. The breakdown of grading is as follows: Tests: 40% We will have at least two tests per marking period. Quizzes: 15% Quizzes can be given any time, likely once per week. Labs: 15% There will be at least one lab per week. Homework: 7% Seldom will homework be assigned for the next day. Research Essay: 15% We will have one research essay per marking period. Science Essay: 5% Students will research two science news articles per month. Class participation: 3% This is not just that you come to class, do the lab and take notes. This means you are actively participating in class discussions. It also will include any rare "extra credit" work. Note: I am very tolerant of accepting late submissions. However, late assignments will not be accepted the last week of the marking period! The Research essay will be a 1200 word research paper, complete with citations, on a specific topic within a general topic. It will be announced well in advance. It will be due no later than the week before the end of the marking period, and two weeks prior to the end of MP4. A general topic will be given, and the student has a choice of what specific topic on which to write. The first general topic will be "The Chemistry of Astronomy," the second will be "Chemistry in Medicine," the third will be "Paints and Coatings," and the fourth and final topic will be "Surfactants." Suggestions for alternative topics will be considered. All submissions will be through MyAccess. Do not write a general survey! A general survey will earn a grade of B at most! The Science News Essay will be a review on a chemistry topic chosen by the student, found in a recent publication (dated 2006 and later). It will be a one and one half page, double spaced review paper, complete with citations. All submissions will be through MyAccess. Follow the direction on the Guidelines page for specific directions. |
