The North Plainfield report card for grades K-5 is a standards-based report card.  This means that a grade is given for several particular areas under each content area.  In math, the standards are taken from the Common Core Standards for Mathematics in Grades K-2, and from the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in grades 3-5.  Next year, all elementary grades will use the Common Core Standards.

The Marking Period Expectation documents can help you understand exactly what a child should be able to do or understand, in each marking period.  A line from one of these documents might look like this:

                                                      MARKING PERIOD 1

                                                      Year End Goal                           4                                       3                                 2                                    1

Counts to 110

Counts to 10

Counts to 8

Counts to 4

Does not count

This means that, by the end of the year, the child should be able to count to 110.  In the FIRST marking period, if the child can count to 10, he/she receives a score of 4.  This is all that is expected in this marking period.  However, look at the Marking Period 2 section to see how the expectation for learning changes.

                                                      MARKING PERIOD 2

                                                      Year End Goal                           4                                       3                                   2                                    1

Notice that the Year End Goal does not change, but the criteria for success does.  Please be sure to check your child's grades against the Marking Period Expectation document.  It can tell you if your child is succeeding, where they might need help, and what is expected of them as they go forward in their grade.  Click on the links below to find the Marking Period Expectation document for your child's grade.
